Be Interested, Be Interesting

Have you ever been around someone who seems to have the “it factor” in social situations? People are drawn to them and the conversation never seems to lag. What is their secret? There's a famous quote attributed to Dale Carnegie that goes: "To be interesting, be interested." This is the stuff of satisfying social interactions.

But what does it mean to be interested? And how do we become more interesting people ourselves?

Being interested means being genuinely curious about other people and the world around you. It means asking questions, listening attentively, and taking the time to learn about new things. It also means being open-minded and accepting of different perspectives, even when you don’t agree with them.

When we're interested in others, we make them feel seen and heard. We show them that we value their thoughts and opinions. And that makes us more likable and relatable.

Being interesting means having a unique perspective on the world and sharing it with others. It means being passionate about your interests and being able to talk about them in a way that is engaging and inspiring. It also means being able to tell stories and share your experiences in a way that is relatable and entertaining.

So, how can we become more interested and interesting people? Here are a few tips:

  • Be curious. Ask questions about the world around you and the people in it. Don't be afraid to dig deeper and learn more about things that interest you.

  • Be open-minded. Be willing to consider different perspectives and learn from others. Don't be afraid to challenge your own beliefs and assumptions.

  • Be passionate. Find things that you're passionate about and pursue them with enthusiasm. Your passion will be contagious and will make you more interesting to others. Talk about your passions with specificity. Pay attention to whether the conversation is engaging the other person.

  • Be authentic. Be yourself and let your true personality shine through. People can spot a fake from a mile away, so don't try to be someone you're not.

  • Be a good storyteller. People love stories, so learn how to tell them well. Share your own experiences, or tell stories that you've heard from others. Just be sure to make the stories interesting and engaging.

  • Be able to laugh at yourself. Don't take yourself too seriously. People are drawn to people who have a sense of humor and who can laugh at themselves.

  • Be positive and upbeat. People are drawn to positive people. Try to focus on the good things in life, and have a positive outlook on the future.

It's also important to remember that being interested and interesting is not about being perfect or having all the answers. Quite the opposite. It's about being genuine, curious, open-minded, and passionate about life.
